NSW: Iemma says desalination is still a last resort option

The NSW government says it has no immediate plans to build a desalination plant in
Sydney .. even though it's called for expressions of interest for the project.

In February .. Premier MORRIS IEMMA suspended plans to build a plant to purify salt
water at Kurnell in Sydney's south .. deciding instead to draw water from underground
aquifers and boost recycling.

But an advertisement calling for expressions of interest for the planning phase of
a desalination plant .. has sparked claims the government will proceed with construction.

Mayor of Sutherland Shire .. KEVIN SCHREIBER .. says it's outrageous to put the plant
back on the agenda .. after being told it's been shelved.

Mr IEMMA says it's just one measure out of many .. the government's taking to secure
Sydney's water supply.
